About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Double Helix Digest is an undergraduate, peer-reviewed journal that features original research, reviews, and commentary in biology, chemistry, and related disciplines. Authored by students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, each article reflects the diverse academic backgrounds and scientific interests of its contributors. The journal is designed to be accessible to a wide audience, including those with varying levels of familiarity with the biosciences. As an Open Access publication hosted by the University Library, Double Helix Digest aims to promote scientific literacy and undergraduate scholarship within and beyond the academic community. In addition to publishing, the journal places a strong emphasis on education by guiding students through the process of academic writing and peer review. Contributors receive support through workshops and collaborative feedback, helping them develop their work from initial concept to final publication.

Peer Review Process

The editorial process at Double Helix Digest is designed to support student writers through each stage of article development while maintaining academic integrity and scientific rigor. Writers begin by submitting a topic, which is evaluated by the editorial board. The board—consisting of the president, editor-in-chief, assistant editor-in-chiefs, and a team of trained editors—reviews each submission and provides individualized feedback. Topics are either approved for progression or returned with recommendations for revision.

Following topic approval, writers move on to drafting their articles. Each draft undergoes multiple rounds of editing, during which at least one editor reviews the piece for accuracy, clarity, organization, and language. Editors also assess the scientific content to ensure that claims are well-supported and the writing is accessible to a broad readership. Each article will go through several drafts. The final draft is then reviewed by at least two members of the board.

The editorial process is collaborative and iterative, with editors working closely with writers to strengthen both the content and communication of their work. This approach allows contributors to gain firsthand experience with peer review while producing polished, publication-ready articles that meet the journal’s standards of quality and accessibility.

Publication Frequency

Double Helix Digest aims to publish one volume each academic year.
